The complete guide to wearing tights what to do and what not to do

Tights can be tricky subject material. Everyone has an opinion on them – some people love them, some people hate them, others know that sometimes, a pair of tights is necessary. They can be a great addition to a dress, shorts, a skirt when the weather takes a turn for the worst, or they can tone down/brighten up a going out outfit. If you’re new to the world of fashion hosiery, we’ve got a complete guide to help you. Here’s what to do, and what not to do:

Do Think About the Colour

Coloured tights can look amazing, just take a look at girl band The Saturdays. However, you should consider the hue before you venture out. Green tights for example could make you look like a Peter Pan wannabee, not a good look! You can get away with green, but they must be a great shade. Take a look at Rachel Bilson for inspiration.

Don’t Try to Emulate The School Girl Look

One big mistake to avoid when it comes to hosiery: wearing socks (Especially frilly socks) over the top. You’ll look like a 12 year old girl!

Be Bold

Bold colours like red can look amazing, especially if you pair them with an otherwise monochrome outfit. Trust us, it works!

Don’t Mix and Match

Try to stick to the same colours and patterns on both legs. Paloma Faith once went out with one green leg and one orange leg. It didn’t look too bad on her, but you’re not Paloma Faith. This look can get a little confusing if you aren’t careful.

Don’t Wear Religious Tights

By religious, we mean holey. Unless you’re trying to carry off the grunge/rock chick/homeless girl look and don’t mind getting a few stares, that is. They very rarely work, so be careful when putting on your tights to avoid ladders. Tip: if you notice the beginning of a ladder, apply some clear nail polish and allow to dry to stop it in it’s tracks!

Use Dark Tights to Tone Down a Bold Outfit

If you’re already wearing a bold outfit, wearing tights in a darker, neutral colour should help to tone it down slightly. Pairing red tights with a pink dress might be a little much, and you should seriously consider how you’ll hurt onlookers eyes when they glance in your direction.

Experiment with Patterns

Patterned tights are great for spicing up an outfit. However, subtle colours are probably the best way to go to ease you into this trend. Hosiery from LeBeau.co.uk will get heads turning.

Don’t Wear Pants Over the Top of Your Tights

Some people do this, believe it or not. Lady GaGa is one prime suspect. We accept that sometimes you may be going to an 80’s themed party, and in these instances, it’s ok. However, under normal circumstances, don’t even think about it.

Now when you go to pull on your tights, you’ll feel confidence knowing that you’re wearing them the right way (we hope)! Have fun experimenting!
