Grunge has been absolutely everywhere for the last few months, as it gives us a tough, edgy, effortless look while still managing to look pulled together and gorgeous at the same time. The grunge look isn’t about dodging the shower or forming dreadlocks; simply about creating an edgy buy effortless look that screams ‘look how cool I am!’ while that ‘I don’t care, I love it’ song plays in the background. If the grunge look sounds like something you’d like to try, read on for outfit ideas and tips:
Hair & Makeup
Your hair and makeup will really make an outfit pop and help to give it the ‘wow’ factor, so it’s important you get it right. You don’t want to have greasy, gross looking hair, nor do you want hair that looks like it’s been primed to perfection. Day old hair is perfect; spritz in some Volumising dry shampoo, tousle it up with your fingers or use a comb to give it a bit of messy volume, and you’ve got grunge hair! You might want to spritz with a beachy wave spray to give it extra grunge points, too.
As for your makeup, eyeliner is a must, and bright/bold lipstick usually finishes off the look!
You don’t have to wear anything on your head, but a beanie hat/backwards baseball cap always looks cool. You could even wear a black bandana as a headband!
Black on Black
You don’t have to stick to black for this look, however; it does look great. Just take a look at Taylor Momsen. Choose dark pieces and neutral coloured pieces to achieve the moody goth look, or go all out rainbow colours to look like a colourful weirdo. It’s all good!
Piles of Jewellery
Grunge isn’t grunge without stacks of rings and bracelets. You should also wear as many earrings as you can fit on your ears!
Cut out Boots
Cut out boots are everywhere, and they really make an outfit look amazing. You can find cheap shoes online that look just like designer cut out boots, so you don’t have to spend a fortune!
Grunge doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom – pull on some cute socks so that everybody knows you’re a cutie at heart.
Handbags are for WAG’s – grunge girls need a cool rucksack in their life. Wear it on one shoulder to look especially careless.
Ripped tights and leggings will literally have fashionistas everywhere falling at your feet. Don’t spend loads on a new pair though – do it yourself with a pair of scissors to show everybody how fashion forward you are.
Long skirts, especially those in a bold print like tartan or with a funky split down the side, look amazing with cutout boots and a slogan t-shirt. Get one that says ‘I hate everyone’ to really show the world how you feel.
Oversized jumpers and tops are a must to tuck into jeans, trousers, leatherette joggers, and PVC skirts. Even throw on a pair of oversized Lennon sunglasses to show everybody just how non conformist you are in winter time.
